Would my brother be allergic to a pet bird? - Pet Home

By admin On March 25, 2012 Under Pet Articles

My brother is allergic to cats, dogs, etc.

I have the same animal allergies as your brother. I had a cockatiel that I loved to death, but I was severely allergic to it. Cockatiels and cockatoos are the only birds with dander, so DO NOT get one of those! I have 2 parakeets that I keep in my room and they produce very little dust. The best caged birds for you to get are canaries, finches, budgies/parakeets, parrotlets, and any other small finch or parrot. Large parrots and anything that begins with "cocka" will give your brother allergies!
(I reccommend budgies best because I absolutely love mine and my male budgie, Angel, sings to me, flies around my room, will perch on my shoulder and "preen" me, and serenades any person in the room. Budgies are super lively and are super cute when they play with toys, especially bells)

People can be allergic to birds, even thought birds have feathers they still produce dander. Many a times people are not allergic to the actual hair hair of the animal, they tend to more allergic to the dander and oils. So yes, people can be allergic to birds. In order to determine this maybe ask your brother to go with you before purchasing the bird, usually places have a "bird room" especially if you go to any sort of rescue, you can always ask if you and your brother are able to get close to the birds to determine if he has any sort of tolerance or allergy towards them. Best of Luck!

I, myself, am allergic to both animal dander from cats & dogs (and other furred things) and to the fur itself as it produces visible hives on my skin.

Birds produce a certain amount of dander- but it?s different from dog/cat dander. Some people are allergic to a bird?s dander, but I personally am not as it comes by way of powdered down, feather sheaths and of course feathers themselves.Plus I am able to sufficiently cuddle my birdies without the hive side effects. Also, a friend of mine?s daughter has severe cat allergies on top of bad asthma and she spends a great deal of time with us in our home.My birds crawl all over her and she has yet to have any problems whatsoever.

If I were to judge your brother?s allergies under these circumstances- I would say no- I don?t think he would be allergic to a pet bird- but that?s the Best Answer: I can give without more background information on him and any other health problems he may have.

Also- different birds produce different amounts of dander so I?d do a little more research before making a final decision.

Good Luck!:D

It should be a smaller bird like a parakeet and it should be ok. Larger birds cause allergies in lots of people. good luck. Here is a link to learn more about parakeets. they make wonderful pets! http://aqualandpetsplus.com/Bird,%20Para?

I?m allergic to mammals but not birds so I would guess not.

well birds are feathered so I would say noError processing request
